Swords Celtic News - March 2010

The Under 15 Premier's battled against Skerries in a tough and bruising game at the Mill in Skerries today. The game saw 3 red and double that in yellow cards before Swords ran out 4 - 2 victors in the game. Jamie Hoare, right, scored twice in the game that keeps the top of this league as tight as possible. League leaders Clontarf surprisingly dropped points when they had a 0 - 0 home draw against Ratoath.

This now means that Clontarf can be caught and overtaken by Swords at the top of the table.

With 9 league games left, its going to be an interesting few months to the end of the season.

Under 14 D win keeps them in top spot

At the start of the season it looked likely that the club may only have one team at Under 14 level - the 14Premier team. However after some hard work by Dave Haskins and Alan Preston, the club now has a healthy second team playing and now leading the 14D league.

Today they came from one nil down to beat Ratoath    2 - 1 and go top, although Woodlawn and Killester are both just 3 points behind each with a game in hand.

Congratulations to the Under 9 Premier Plus team who put on a fine performance and beat Maynooth 2 - 1 to retain their position at the top of the Premier Plus league. Well done to goalkeeper Daniel Grace who saved a 1st half penalty in the game.

Under 10's into

Lifestyle Sports Cup Final

Well done to the Swords Celtic Under 10's who beat local rivals Swords Manor to book their place in the Cup Final which will be held in the NDSL at Oscar Traynor Road.

Celtic were on top throughout the first half and despite many efforts they failed to score. In the second half their superiority came through with goals from Jackson (left) and Jack Leahy. This is the second year which this team has reached the cup finals - last year they beat Maynooth in the final - lets hope they can repeat the victory this year.

Well done also to Thomas Burke and Jack McBain - both from Vinny Connolly's Under 7 team who both scored Hat-tricks against Priorswood on 6th March and who have been added to the Hat-trick hall of fame.

The weekend fixtures give us two local derby's with Swords Manor to look forward to. Both fixtures are at home. Firstly the Under 10's play a repeat of last weeks game in which they beat the Manor away, 3 - 2, this time its for a place in the final of the Lifestyle Sports Cup. Having also beaten them in the home fixture last November, 2 - 1, the team will have one eye on the cup final which will be played against the winners of St. Joseph's East Wall and Malahide.

The Under 11's will be hoping that their 1st Round game in the Haughey Cup against the Manor finally gets played - the bad weather has led to this fixture being cancelled seven times already.

One more game of note features the Under 16 Premier team who play Marino FC in the 2nd Round of the Ken McKay cup.

These last two games both kick off at 1.00pm - sure what else would you be doing on a Sunday??

Swords Celtic News - February 2010

Gavin Courage - 12B team in action at home against Castleknock - the game ending in a 5 - 4 win for Swords and puts the team into 2nd place behind Portmarnock in the league.

The 11B teams 4 - 1 home win over Mid Sutton puts them on top of their league and the Under 16Premier team had a convincing five nil win over Lusk United in the quarter finals of the Ita Farrell Cup.

Thomas Burke, left, scored twice when the Under 7C team played Clontarf in Swords on the last weekend of February. The game was very competitive but two goals from Thomas and one from Jack McBain wasn't enough to win the game as Clontarf went on to take the points with a 4 - 3 victory.

The Under 9 Premier Plus team also hosted Clontarf  in the Premier Plus Cup, quarter final.

Swords won the tie 3 - 1 and go on to play Balbriggan in the Cup Semi Final.

The Under 8A DDSL team hosted St. Francis and beat them by two goals to one. Jack Blake scored the first with a cracking shot - the second goal came from a Swords corner which went in off the head of a St. Francis defender. The visitors and current league leaders fought back fiercely and scored late in the game but were unable to get a second and so crashed to their 1st defeat of the season.

Good Wins for DDSL Saturday teams

Although most Swords Celtic teams play their football in the NDSL league, three Saturday teams play in the DDSL (Dublin District Schoolboy league). DDSL football means that away games can be played anywhere in the greater Dublin area from Leixlip, to Templeogue to Dunboyne and all the big name Dublin teams such as St. Kevins, Cherry Orchard, Joey's and Crumlin are found competing in the league.

Swords Celtic have teams at Under 8A1, Under 10A and Under 11B1 level and with the Under 8's game off, both other teams enjoyed good away wins on Saturday 20th.

The Under 10A team traveled to Templeogue and took all three points in a 4 - 2 win. The team remain unbeaten in the league this season with six wins and four draws to date.

The win keeps Swords in 2nd place in the league, three points behind current leaders Cherry Orchard who have a game in hand. It looks like the home and away clashes against Cherry Orchard may decide the fate of the league this season.

The Under 11B1 team traveled to Leicester Celtic and beat them by 3 - 2 thereby avenging Leicesters visit to Swords last October when they beat Celtic by four goals to three.

Lourdes Celtic currently lead the league having being unbeaten over the eight games played to date - Swords Celtic sit comfortably in third place three points behind Mid Sutton and with a game in hand. With Lourdes looking favorite to win the league, the runner up place will most likely be decided by the outcome of the home and away fixtures between Swords and Mid Sutton.

Two fine examples of our teams competing and challenging for titles at the top levels in DDSL football.

Pitch 1 officially opened - 13th February 2010

Former Republic of Ireland manager - Jack Charlton, Minister Trevor Sargent T.D. and Fingal Deputy Mayor Tom Kelleher jointly cut the ribbon on the official opening of Pitch 1 on 13th February 2010.

A large group of visitors and local dignitaries turned out for the visit of Sporting Fingal to Swords Celtic to challenge for the 'Michael Toft' memorial Trophy.

Minister Sargent, Michael Kennedy TD and a number of Fingal Co. Councillors joined with Swords Celtic and Sporting Fingal officials to celebrate the inaugural game on the pitch.

Club chairman Ray Kelly spoke of the development of the club over recent years and expressed the clubs appreciation to Fingal Co. Co. for the assistance provided by them.

In return Deputy Mayor Tom Kelleher spoke of how easy, accommodating and reasonable the council found Swords Celtic to deal with on matters relating to club development plans.

Special guest of the day was former Ireland Manager Jack Charlton who gave a short speech with his usual humour and wit. Click HERE to see Jacks speech.

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony the main event of the day took place.

Sporting Fingal won the game by a good margin - with Celtic's Joe Reilly scoring the only goal for the home team. However, this game wasn't just about winning - for Sporting it formed a part of their build up to the new season in the Premier league and European football, and for Swords Celtic players, it provided a good competitive game at the high standard to which every member of the club aspires to play at.

At the end of the match, Mick Toft, sponsor of the trophy in memory of his son Michael, spoke briefly before Conan Byrne and Lorcan Fitzgerald accepted the Trophy on behalf of Sporting Fingal.

On a weekend when only one 11 a-side game survived the weather, the Under 15 Premier's went to North County Dublin to play Balbriggan in the league.

Their 3 - 1 win takes Celtic to 2nd place in the Premier league behind leaders and rival title contenders Clontarf. To date, the Under 15's remain unbeaten this season in both league and cup competitions having won four and drawn three in the league - including draws with title contenders Clontarf at home and Portmarnock away.

Today's goals came courtesy of Gavin Purcell (2) and Graham Callan, both of whom also play on the Under 15 NDSL representative squad.

Swords Celtic to play FAI cup winners - Sporting Fingal

Swords Celtic are delighted to welcome Sporting Fingal to Swords to play in the Michael Toft Memorial Trophy to celebrate the official opening of Pitch Number 1.

Sporting enjoyed double success last season when they won promotion to the FAI Premier league and also beat Sligo Rovers to lift the FAI cup.

They will play a Swords Celtic senior team managed my Darren Allen.

Sporting Fingal have worked closely with Celtic over the past number of seasons by providing regular coaching sessions at the club.

Fingal will be using the fixture as part of its pre-season programme before they embark on life in the Premier League.

Swords Celtic invite all team members and their friends and families to come to the club to support this special event.

Swords Celtic News - January 2010

Pictured above is John Mc Donnell who scored twice in the 12B team victory over Ratoath including a 30 yard cracker in the first half.

Cup Wins for 15 and 16 Premier teams, but 14 Premiers fail to progress.

After many failed attempts, the 15 and 16 Premier teams finally got to play the next round of their cup games.

Both teams lost home advantage and travelled to North County clubs at Rush and Balbriggan.

The Under 15's knocked in five against Rush including a brace from Owen Timmons.

The sixteen's went one better scoring six against Balbriggan premier. That's eleven goals scored by the Under 16 Premier team in the last two games.

Salthill Devons didn't waste their long journey to Swords when they knocked our U14 Premier team out of the Goodson cup by 3 - 1.

The 14B team however won their league cup game against Killester 4 - 1 and the 12B team beat Ratoath Harps in the first kick off of the day.

Under 16's Round 1      Ken Mc Kay cup

The sole game that took place at Swords Celtic this Sunday saw Clontarf challenge in the 1st Round of the Ken McKay cup.

The first half saw Celtic pile on lots of pressure resulting in several fine saves by the Clontarf keeper. Despite this, Clontarf opened the scoring before Jonny Mackay, left, equalised during one of his many attacking runs.

Clontarf missed the chance to take the lead again when a penalty was hoofed high and wide.

The 2nd half saw Swords exert their superiority, firstly with a long distance shot from Jack Harkin which ended up in the net, followed by goals from Eoin Shanahan, Luke Maher and in the last minute, James Cronin. The final score - a 5 - 1 win for Swords.

Match Photos are on the Under 16 Page

Believe it or not, the weekend of 24th & 25th October 2009 was the last full weekend when Saturday and Sunday football was played in the current season. Since then over 90 games have been cancelled involving Swords Celtic teams due to flooded and frozen pitches.

The NDSL 11 a-sides leagues are due to start back this weekend - fixtures are posted on the fixture page.

Traditionally these leagues finish by the end of May each year, that leaves a maximum of 21 weekends to play all outstanding cup, league cup and league matches this season.

We will all be hoping that we have seen the end of poor weather closing pitches week after week - any further disruptions may make playing all the planned fixtures an impossible task.

Swords Celtic News - December 2009

Shane Geddes - 15P
Swords Celtic v Artane / Beaumont

The final eleven a side game of the season was played at Artane / Beaumont when the Under 15 premier team played in the first round of the Molly Martin cup.

The venue was switched for this game when the Swords Celtic pitches were once again called off.

Celtic started brightly but failed to score with several good chances early in the first half.

Artane Beaumont took full advantage of this carelessness and scored a wonderful goal from open play shortly followed by a second from a corner ball.

Some words of wisdom from the sideline couple with a number of substitutions brought the team back to reality and the goals started to flood in.

The final score was an 8 - 2 Win for Swords which included a brace from Shane Geddes - pictured left - and a penalty kick from the now regular penalty taker - Jamie Darcy.

Dylan Buchanan - 16P called for International Trials

Congratulations to Dylan Buchanan, Under 16 Premier team who has been invited to trials for the Republic of Ireland Under 17 squad. This squad will be competing in the elite section of the qualifiers for the UEFA Under 17 championships next summer.

Dylan is one of five players on the 16P team currently involved with the NDSL representative squad. This squad will compete in SFAI inter league competitions against representative teams from leagues across the country. The winners at regional level compete for All Ireland titles.

Swords Celtic encourage all their players to compete for places in these squads which provide a different perspective on coaching and greater opportunities to develop skills against the very best around.

We wish Dylan 'Good Luck' in his upcoming trial.

Swords Celtic News - November 2009

Good wins for 7a-side 'A' teams

After the four week break resulting from bad weather, our 8A ddsl, 9A ndsl and 10A ddsl teams all returned wins in today's games.

The 8A's enjoyed their first win of the season in the top level of the DDSL league with a three - two win over St. Francis. The Under 9 Premier Plus team, currently second in their league with a game in hand, beat St. Columban's boys in the cup by a margin of five goals to one.

The Under 10A's beat rivals Home Farm by a single goal scored by Adam Shields - the 10A's are currently hovering close to the top of a very tight league in which three points separate the top seven teams.

The Under 9A team congratulate goal scorer Karl Stanley.

The Under 10A team congratulate goal scorer Adam Shields.

Congratulations to Sporting Fingal on winning the FAI Ford cup on Sunday and on their promotion to the FAI Premier League last week.

Shaun Williams, Sporting Fingal mid-fielder is shown with the FAI Ford Cup in Swords - also shown are Glenn Burke, Gareth Mc Grath and Mark Holton - both goalkeepers with Swords Celtic, all of whom attended the team's civic reception at Swords Castle.

First match on new Pitch 1 - 8th November 2009

Fourteen months after Swords Celtic commenced the redevelopment of Pitch 1, the seniors finally got a chance to trial the clubs investment when they played Hyde Park FC, Balbriggan in the Pollycoff Cup. The day was beautiful, but the grounds were quiet with all other games off due to bad weather earlier in the week. The game was a joy to watch with a good friendly atmosphere between the teams.

Swords Celtic led at half time with goals from Ben Mc Quillan and Bobby Pepper. Minutes after his introduction in the 2nd half, Dave Hunter knocked in a third before man of the match - Kevin Cox - who didn't stop running all day - scored a spectacular fourth goal to end the tie in a four nil home victory.

A fine result for the 1st match on Pitch 1.

14 Premier win cup battle on Penalties

After an hour long drive to Ardee to play in the Cup, no one wanted to hear the news that kickoff had been put back an hour and a half. Worse was to come later when a number of players including the goalkeeper, Graham McConnell had to leave the field of play due to illness. The team however was unfazzed by this and shortly before half time they took the lead when on form Scott Hooper converted Dominic Mahon's cross. In the second half Swords were reduced to 10 players for a second yellow card, and Ronan Farrelly also took over in goal. One all at full time and penalties decided the game.

Gary Forde, Brian Finnegan, Mark Lennahan, Scott Hopper and Ronan Farrelly took the responsibility - the result - a 4 - 3 win for Swords.

The day was topped off with the news that Dominic Mahon has made the NDSL representative panel for this season - all the club wish him well.

15 Premier 'Welcome' Clontarf to Swords Celtic

3 - 3 was the result in this top of the table clash which saw Clontarf's league and Cup winners from the 2007 and 2008 seasons come to Swords for the first of two league games. Two nil down at half time, Celtic battled hard to level at 2 - 2 - goals from Eddie and Graham before Clontarf went 3 - 2 ahead. The game was fast and physical and saw the sending off of one of the Clontarf players before Swords Gavin Purcell equalised to draw the game.

Clontarf conceded three goals in this game - the same team only conceded two goals in the whole of last season.

Under 9's Premier Plus

Saturday's Under 9 A team had a 2 - 1 home win against Skerries sending them to of the new NDSL Premier plus league.

Under 15 Premier win Cup tie on Penalties

Paul Darcy took his Under 15 Premier team to Albion Rovers in the opening round of the Under 15 Evans Cup.

Despite the crossbar saving both teams either side of halftime - the game had the feel of one that would not be won during the normal 80 minutes.

During extra time both teams again failed to score leaving the game to be decided on penalties.

An incredible 25 penalties followed - the difference between the teams being three penalty saves by the Swords Celtic keeper - Gareth McGrath.

Keepers' Ball

For the past two weeks Goalkeepers from the 11 a-side teams at Swords Celtic have been undertaking Goalkeeper Coaching courtesy of Chris Konopka from Sporting Fingal.

Chris has been working on all aspects of their game including speed, agility, fitness, reaction, ball handling and fun

Its clear from watching the sessions that the keepers are both learning from and enjoying the training.

The dry weather over the past few weeks has meant that the goalies this year are training on grass - instead of the traditional muck.

Coaching continues until 21st October

Under 13 A team win league and are promoted to the Premier division

Congratulations to the Under 13 A team who have won their league in the final match of the season.

This league went down to the wire with a neck and neck contest between Swords and Trinity Donaghmede for the top spot. Celtic's final game was postponed last week due to bad weather and with Trinity Donaghmede winning their final game Swords knew that a win was a must to capture the title.

The beautiful sunny day in Clogherstown saw the sides level 0 - 0 at half time - after several Swords chances came close.

After the half time team talk Swords came out attacking every ball and following a Celtic corner Clogherstown put the ball into their own net to open the scoring.

From then on it was all Swords with attack after attack.  Goals from Darragh Lambe, Lorcan Cassidy and two from Sean Gelling left the final score at 5 nil to Swords.

The game had many fine performances and also saw a return to play for goalkeeper Adam Clarke who missed most of the season due to injury.

Next season Swords Celtic will have teams playing at Under 14 and Under 15 Premier level.

Under 14P O'Neill's International Cup Final

Clontarf 1 - Swords Celtic 0

Anyone who had expected an easy, straight forward win for Clontarf in the Under 14 Premier cup final were in for a tense and long wait before their team managed to score the single goal which brought them the cup title for the second year in a row.

Heavy rain moved the match from the grass to the All Weather pitch at the NDSL - Oscar Traynor Road and the rain was present for most of the game.

Swords fought hard and defended well throughout the game and the sides were nil all at half time.

Following the break, Clontarf continued to push for the opening goal and finally with 10 minutes to go them got the break they were waiting for when they lobbed the Swords goalie to get the opener.

It ended in defeat for Celtic - but they gave a performance that everyone was more than proud of.

The officials selected Owen Timmons as 'Man of the match' - his performance in midfield against his somewhat taller opponent was something he should be proud of.

The Under 13A team will win their league on Sunday if they beat Clogherstown - away.

The top of this league has been tight all season and Celtic go to the final day just a point ahead of their league rivals - Trinity Donaghmede.

Game postponed due to the bad weather

The Under 14P team play in the final of the O'Neills International Cup at Oscar Traynor Road - on Sunday - kick off at 4.30.

Their opposition on the day is Clontarf FC - the current cup holders.

All Swords Celtic members are welcome to come and support the team.

May the best team win - come on Celtic.

Under 10's Cup Final

Swords Celtic have been advised by the NDSL that the Cup Final between Swords Celtic and St. Joseph's East Wall has been postponed.

No further details have been provided at this time.

Marathon Day is big success

The Swords Celtic Annual Soccer Marathon took place at Balheary on Bank Holiday Monday.

Club members and visitors were greeted by the aroma of Bar be qued burgers and Hot dogs, John O'Reilly manning the grill followed by the option of freshly baked cakes and buns before dispatching the kids to the serious events of the day.

The first group to start off were the Pee-Wees at 10.00 o'clock - a dull sky overhead suggested rain wasn't too far away.

The main events of the day were the football league competition and the penalty shoot outs both of which were enjoyed by kids and parents alike.

A number of the games went to penalty shoot outs - you can view these here:

Semi Final Penalties - Megan & Andy in goal - Glenn v Megan

Gavin Courage in Goal - Gavin & Evan - Carl v Andy

Inside Karen Darcy and Orla Sadlier were busy face painting for the kids while Alan was running the pool competitions for adults and children.

DJ Paul Grace filled the air with every sort of music from Abba to U2 and kept the crowd updated as to the schedule.

The pitches filled up during the day as the older teams arrived - some of the Under 14's and Under 16's helped with the running of the events before their own sessions started.

Zeus - the Greek God of Rain - spared the grounds of Swords Celtic from rain for the duration of the Marathon - and the sun even managed to peek out late in the afternoon.

By 4.00 pm the day was wrapping up for another year - Swords Celtic want to say a big Thank You and well done to everyone who cooked, baked, sold, managed, directed cars, played music, made tea, set up pitches, cleared up and anything else which made the day the success that it was.

The final will be on Sunday 17th May 2009 at 5pm.

The course will be run at the Swords Celtic grounds and will take place over a four week period.

                                   Under 9 Cup Final is drawn 2 - 2

Goals from Jack Leahy and Kevin Murray have taken Swords Celtic Under 9's to a Cup Final replay next Thursday evening at 7.15 pm against Ashbourne. The replay will be played at Oscar Traynor Road.

8 teams in with chances of league or cup titles

Three Swords Celtic teams are still competing in the later stages of Cup's and with another five teams with a good shout of winning their leagues, the end of the season is looking promising.

The 8A ddsl team are currently 3rd and have a game in hand over the top team - only 2 points separate the top three so this is going to be a tight finish. Celtic have only been beaten once this season.

The 9A team are also in third in a league so tight that any of the top four could win the title.

The 10B team are the first winners of the season after their 1 - 0 win over Maynooth last weekend.

The 12B team currently top their league - 2nd place St. Ita's have 3 games in hand - with several outstanding games still to be played, any one of the top 5 teams in this league still have a chance to win the title.

The Under 13A team are still topping their league after conceding an equalising goal in the 7th minute of added time at the weekend.

With three games left to be played, the quality of the team combined with steady nerves and a smidgen of good luck should see them stay on top and get promoted to the 14Premier league next year.

The Under 9P ndsl team play their cup final next Saturday against Ashbourne - 25th April at 1.00 pm. The game will be played at the Oscar Traynor centre and all supporters are welcome.

The 10A team play their final against St. Joseph's from East Wall on Saturday 15th May at 12.00.

Finally, the Under 14P team are in the later stages of two cups.

On Sunday 26th April they play Boyne Rovers away for a place in the Under 14's O'Neill Cup final.

Having beaten St. Joseph's last week they must travel to Salthill Galway to play their last 8 match in the Under 14's Lions club All Ireland Cup.

We wish all our teams Good Luck in these games.

Under 10B team win league

The team celebrates their victory

Goalscorer Richard Dehene

Well done to the Under 10 B team on winning their NSDL league in the final match of the season.

Maynooth were the opposition and only needed a draw to take the title.

The game was tense and nervous and was nil all at half time. In the second half Celtic did most of the attacking play and thought that they had won the game late in the second half when Richard Dehene headed the ball in from a corner only to see the Maynooth goalie touch the ball to the underside of the top bar.

However the home team only had to wait a few minutes more until Richard buried the ball in the Maynooth net to win the clubs first trophy of the season.

Under 14A's win penalty shootout

to secure quarter final place in the Lions Club All Ireland Under 14 cup.

St. Joseph's Boys from the DDSL came to Swords and played out a 1 - 1 draw after extra time leaving the match to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Swords won 4 - 2 and will meet Salthill away in Galway in the next round.

October 2008

Work commenced in September 2008 on the development of Pitch Number 1 in front of the Clubhouse with the careful killing off of the old grass surface.

During the last two weeks of the month contractor 'Sportworks' from Naul, working on behalf of Fingal Co Co has been carefully ploughing, rotavating, harrowing, and grubbing the pitch surface.

Tests carried out on the ground established that the pitch sits on a gravel bed which assists good drainage.

On Friday 26th September 320 Tonnes of Wexford sand were delivered to the grounds of the club - the sand has been spread and mixed with the top soil - this mixture keeps the soil open during play and aides the growth of the grass surface.

Prior to seeding, the pitch was lazer leveled to a tolerance of + / - 50mm - and a pre-seed fertilizer was applied before being sown with '100 dwarf Rye Grass'.This variety has a high wear tolerance, holds a good winter colour and has a good root structure.

The contractor, Ollie Ennis, is hoping that we will have enough warm weather before the winter sets in to allow for successful seed germination to take place over the next few weeks.

On completion of the works, a temporary fence will be installed around the pitch to allow the new grass to grow undisturbed.

When complete, the pitch will measure 105 metres x 80 metres - this will allow the playing area of the pitch to be moved within the overall area periodically to allow for certain areas, such as goal mouths, to be rested.

Swords Celtic are exploring the possibility with Fingal Co. Co. of providing a permanent high quality fencing around the pitch.

The club expects to hold the first competitive games on Pitch 1 in September 2009 at which time this premier quality pitch will be the envy of soccer clubs in the Fingal region.

NEWS September 2007

Major Sponsorship from The Wright Group No doubt you have all seen the name of THE WRIGHT GROUP on the new tracksuits and some of the sets of football gear. Over the past twelve months the schoolboy section has received considerable sponsorship from the Wright Group in many different forms. Firstly all the club tracksuits have been subsidised by the Wright Group and this continues on an ongoing basis. Most members benefited directly from this sponsorship as the tracksuits were sold at a substantially reduced cost thanks to this sponsorship. The amount involved in the tracksuit deal was by far the most generous sponsorship the schoolboy section has ever obtained. Secondly The Wright Group has invested substantially in our Academy, with a three year sponsorship deal now in place. This has allowed us to invest substantially in our academy section, and the performance our youngest teams is the best evidence that the sponsorship is making a substantial difference in our youth development. On top of these two generous sponsorship deals, The Wright Group continues to invest in different parts of the schoolboy section, already sponsoring five teams and main sponsor of this years marathon, which is so important to the club. We hope to mutually develop the relationship over the coming years and all involved in the schoolboy section would like to thank the Wright Group for their ongoing support. The nearest of Wrights establishments is Wrights Café in Swords, so if your in there for a bite to eat, let them know the sponsorship is much appreciated.

BOYNE ROVERS 3 V  3 SWORDS CELTC - Sept 07

An outstanding performance in the 2nd half saw Swords Celtic 17P claw back 3 goals to get a well deserved 3-3 draw at Boyne Rovers. This was their first league game in the "Premier League" of the 2007/2008 season and they played outstandingly. Boyne Rovers runners up in the "A" league last year were playing the league Champions of the "B"league so a entrauling game was in store. Rovers won the toss and played with the hill and wind. Celtic started well and getting good passes going and were the dominent side. After about 20 mins against the run of play Boyne Rovers scored the opener. the lads kept plugging on but 2 more sloppy goals were conceded. The boys never felt they were out of it and kept battling on. Whistle blows half time, now we start to play.

Swords Celtic make a change bringing Andy Mynes off and bringing Jonathan Scally on. Pushing Ross Madigan right midfield Jonathan goes centre mid and immediately makes a difference. Whistle blows 2nd half begins and the boys push straight away once again hassling Rovers. Swords make a change bringing off Danny O Neill and bringing on Paddy Callan with immediate effect. The passing gets better and every Celtic player wants the ball. A ball is whipped in and captain Dave Noonan scores 3-1. From tip off Celtic are straight in hungry for more after some good passing a ball is whipped in from the right and Jonathan Scally gets a second 3-2.  Now the boys knew they they could do it and nothing was going to stop them. To Boyne Rovers credit they pushed on looking for a 4th goal but our defence was'nt having any of it, and when we made a break and the ball was put to the back post Paddy Callan, in through striker fashion, put in the back of the net 3-3 we could see a 4th. Rovers rattled now tried to slow everything down and take the point but to the credit of the Swords Celtic players they pushed for the winner. A free kick from the left hand side was whipped in by Jonathan Scally only to be narrowly missed by the head of Kevin Cox. The Ref blew and to Boyne Rovers relief the game was over. A game of 2 halves and a get result for Swords Celtic.

Well done lads, were looking forward to watching you line out next season.

SEVEN A SIDE SUCCESS AT ALL LEVELS

What a season so far for the 7/9 a side teams, with success at under 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Things are looking fantastic for the club at this age level.  See below for details.

Under 6 teams

Our under age teams from the academy have excelled again this year with both under 6 teams doing extremely well this season.

The Under 6 B team manager by Brian Batten finished their league mid table and have improved immensely since their first match of the season, which was actually played the day after the team was formed. Since then Brian has turned them into a well organized outfit and they are looking forward to playing at the same age group again next season and no doubt they will improve their position on this season.

The 6A team managed by John and Garreth had a super season finishing top of the table with just one defeat all season. So successful was the team they are intending to go straight into DDSL football at under 7 next seasons, which will be another first for the club.

Both this years under 6s will remain in the academy for another year as it is without doubt proving to be very successful in developing our younger talent.

Under 7

Our under 7A team playing in the NDSL 8C1 have finished in runners up spot this season, following their first place finish last year. Things are looking good for the team manager by Mark Girvan who will enter the DDSL next season at the under 8 age group again.

Under 8

Our under 8A team playing in the DDSL 8B1 have won the league this season. The winning margin in the end was a single point but it was a great achievement considering the team was moved up a couple of leagues during the season. Well done to Dave and Keith for another successful season.

Under 9

Our under 9B team playing in the DDSL 9D league have also won the league this season. The team manager by Vincent McGrath won comfortably in the end and must be looking forward to moving up a couple of league places next season. With four under 9 teams fielded this year we should be in good shape for next year in preparation for 11 a side football the year after. Well done to all four under nines for putting in the effort all season.

Under 17

With so much success to talk about at 7 a side level, it’s great to see one of our 11 a side teams making an impact in the DDSL at a high level of football. The under 17s managed by Paul Darcy and Ciaran Johnson  currently lie in third position in the 17A (north) league. With every chance of the team finishing in 2nd position, we may have a second DDSL team playing premier league football next season
